About English Studies
In the Information Age, no skills are more valuable than reading and writing. This explains recent employment studies which show growing corporate demand for graduates of English studies programs. Careers in Technical Writing and Teaching English are particularly high growth areas. At the Undergraduate Level, IUP students who choose to Major or Minor in English will develop strong expertise at writing and critical thinking. Students in English also explore a wide variety of literary genres and theories. The IUP Undergraduate English curriculum provides options for earning a Bachelor of Arts in English Degree, Bachelor of Arts in English/Pre-Law Degree or a Bachelor of Science in English Education Degree.
Student members of the English department are offered many unique learning opportunities. We have an annual Undergraduate English Conference every spring where students present their own literary studies and creative writing. We have a literary magazine called the New Growth Arts Review whose student editors publish IUP student fiction and poetry. We also have a large English Peer Mentor Program through which advanced English majors provide guidance to students new to the program. And there's even a Student Lounge where all English majors have their own campus mailboxes and can hang out and talk to friends and professors. The English Department's Faculty have doctoral degrees from the world's leading universities. The faculty are committed to high quality teaching and many have won IUP campus and national teaching awards. Many IUP English faculty have published books with leading academic presses and have also published articles in all sorts of highly regarded academic journals, including College Composition and Communication, College English, and English Journal. The IUP English faculty also regularly present at the most prestigious English conferences such as MLA, CCCC, NCTE, and TESOL.
