The Naked Gun is a comedy that was in theaters in the early 90's.  The category of comedic movies that this would classify as is a Parody of Spoof.  "A parody or spoof are specific types of comedy that are usually a humorous take-off of a more serious film or genre, ridiculing the style, conventions, formulas, or motifs of a serious work." (Dirks)

The Naked Gun movie that parodied television cop shows is a very popular spoof.  Naked Gun was based off of  television show called 'Police Squad'.  Leslie Neilsen stars as 'Police Squad's' own granite-jawed, rock brained cope Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth.  Priscilla Presley, OJ Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on. (Naked Gun Web Page )

Basically the entire movie is ridiculous.  The first thing that should tip people off that there is no way this bogus movie could be real, is by having someone trying to assassinate the Queen of England by using a mind control scheme.  Why would a police officer in America care about what is going on over in England? In the synopsis of the movie it claims that a stuffed beaver gets in on the crime fighting as well as OJ Simpson.  This entire movie is not meant to be taken seriously and I think, or I hope that people will have enough common sense to know that.  Law enforcement officials are not bumbling fools, but in fact, work very hard to solve their cases.
