Graduate Studies in English at Indiana
University of Pennsylvania
Indiana University of Pennsylvania has long standing, internationally recognized graduate programs. We offer both Doctor of Philosophy
degrees and Master of Arts degrees in English.
There are two doctoral programs in English, one in Composition and TESOL
and one in Literature and Criticism. Both programs lead to a Doctor of Philosophy in English. Both doctoral programs offer a full range of excellent courses taught by experienced faculty members. A recent survey by the Modern Language Association found IUP's doctoral programs in English among the most successful in employment for their graduates.
The Master of Arts in English responds to the specific needs of four groups of students: students interested in gaining a generalist background in graduate English studies, students wanting to concentrate on literature, students seeking secondary English certification or desiring to enhance their skills in teaching English, and students who want to teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). The Master of Arts programs all require 36 credit hours, either of course work (12 courses) or a combination of course work and an internship or thesis. Each option has its own set of requirements for the distribution of those 36 hours, and each has its own admissions committee.
