Doctor of Philosophy in Composition and TESOL

Educating teachers of English language and composition from across the US and around the world.

Doctor of Philosophy in Composition and TESOL

Indiana University of Pennsylvania's doctoral program in English with a concentration in Composition and TESOL meets the needs of English instructors at two-year and four-year colleges and universities. The program is designed to increase the professional qualifications and teaching effectiveness of instructors now in teaching positions. Because of its emphasis on language research and composition, the program is also appropriate for high-school English instructors and teachers of English to non-native speakers in second or foreign language contexts.

The program recognizes the changing structure of American education and the interdisciplinary nature of research into adult literacy. It offers graduate students an innovative schedule of courses. It provides core courses in rhetoric and linguistics as well as specialty courses in Composition and TESOL and various program electives. In addition, there are courses in educational psychology, research design and statistics, literature and other areas.

The emphasis of the program, then, is on the flexible, yet intensive, preparation of instructors of literacy. To achieve this flexibility, the program is designed to permit variation in the fields of concentration. Course and program alternatives may be adjusted to reflect the personal goals of students in consultation with the Composition and TESOL Committee, a committee of those faculty approved to teach Composition and TESOL graduate courses. All students focus their inquiry and research on the uses of interdisciplinary knowledge for the transmission of literacy in the teaching of English.
