Rose and I got a great swim across the Katherine River and back during our
lunch break in the first gorge toward the end of the cruise. There
are seawater crocs in the canyon, but they stick to themselves, unobtrusively,
as you'll see in an upcoming photo, and they don't bother humans. Mentally
programmed by the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, I thought this water would
be freezing, especially in this Australian "winter" (hah! wish our winter was
like this)--but it was very comfortable, a nice cool-off. I enjoyed
drifting amidst kayaks. Which reminds me: Down here they call kayaks
"canoes," which explained why when I emailed down to Nitmiluk weeks before we
made the trip asking if we could rent kayaks, they replied that they had only
"canoes." But I'm glad we took the cruise anyway--saw more and, despite
the seawater crocs not being a worry, we might have been nervous anyway about
swimming right next to one. Two women got their kayak stuck on a rock
earlier during our cruise, and our guide had to radio for a ranger to come down
and save them. When I asked that chubby, laconic guide if there were any
seawater crocs at this stop (playing straight man for him), without missing a
beat he pointed just a few feet away and said, "Only over there."
This reminds me that throughout our time in Australia, I regularly declared
to Rose (as Aussies actually do), "No worries!"--to which she always replied,
"Worries."
