Class activities

  1. How did the film, In the Light of Reverence affect your understanding of the issues we have been discussing relative to Devils Tower and The Way to Rainy Mountain? As you write, consider these questions: how did the interviews and commentary from the various individuals influence your thinking? how did the narrative about the 500 mile run around the Black Hills affect your response to the controversy about climbing? how did the images of the landscape and towns affect your perspective towards the land? Discuss your responses in groups of three and report to the whole class one interesting comment from your group.

  2. Exploring Yellowstone. Film. Response.

  3. Exploring Yellowstone: website explorations, write a paragraph of response to some information you found interesting. Explain why you find this information interesting.

  4. Article critique: write a response to an article you found on "your topic." Follow this format:

Title. Author. Source and date of publication.

Write a brief summary

Write a response to the information and ideas presented by the author. Comment on the writer’s bias and disciplinary "lens." comment on the ways in which the author appeals to your interests on the topic.

5. Discuss online history. Excerpts from Olmsted's letter. Questions about the introduction/first chapter:

How does the author present his attitude toward the early history overall? What specific problems does he note in trying to make sense of the early history of the National Parks?
