Thursday, July 9. Also for Thursday, July 16th. Culture of the National Parks
Class Plan.
1. Explore the National Park you have identified for your major project, or choose a Park that you wish to look at today, or continue working with Devils Tower. Go to the nps.gov website for that Park OR go to npca.org. Find something interesting to read under the tab, History and Culture. Choose something that you can read through in about ten minutes. Write a summary of what you read, identifying these elements:
Critique Format
- Title, author's name, publication information (source--either journal title or URL)
- the key points in the article (your summary)
- what you find most interesting or surprising (quotations or paraphrase)
- Your commentary on the material, explaining your view, opinions, reactions (use your critical lenses and/or your new perspectives on the National Parks, including but not limited to these: a landscape aesthetic (ideas of identity and beauty associated with place); place as "hierophany" or sacred/divine; monumentalism; the sublime; the picturesque; nationalism/patriotism; iconic representations in imagery (visual or verbal); economic considerations related to the development of tourism; the NPS Mission Statement (to protect, preserve for future enjoyment/recreation; maintain as is; for all people).
- Send this critique to me within an email message (lmasiell@iup.edu)
