Class Plan, Monday, Sept. 28

The Power Boost: Focus on Intentional Revision to Enhance Ethos, Logos, Pathos.

1. Freewriting. Topic of your choice. Some ideas: topics for your revised essay; the weekend; how your courses are going; social activities at IUP; additional responses to readings. For example, write about the reading that you did NOT choose for your summary/commentary. What was difficult about the Angiers piece? What made that challenging to read? What was it exactly that Alexie did as a writer to engage your interest in his topic? Can you point to specific words or phrasings that he used that got your attention and created an emotional appeal What information did he bring in that surprised you?

2. I'll check the revision planning guide for those of you who did not have them completed by Friday, Sept. 25th.

3. Strategies for "boosting" ethos, logos, pathos in your writing. How have you noticed writers creating emotional appeals in their work? How have you noticed the ways in which writers integrate information in their work? How have you noticed writers creating their personalities?

4. Revision work. Try incorporating more ethos, pathos, or logos into your writing. Remember that the most effective revision is intentional revision, so think about the kinds of changes you want to make, then work them in. For example, you could decide that you need more description in your writing in order to increase logos and pathos. Reread your draft, looking for places where you can add objective descriptions so that the reader can be right there with you. Reread again, looking for places where you can make your descriptions emotional so that you can add pathos and help your reader relate to your experiences through emotional connections.

11:15 class only: visit from Writing Center staff member to discuss the WC self-review that we are participating in.

For Weds: one summary/commentary; work on your revision. For Friday, note that you need to have a full draft of your revised essay for peer exchange.
