Guidelines for the Third Portfolio (Research)
This portfolio will consist of these works:
1.one summary/commentary in response to one article that you found through the IUP Library databses (20 points).
2. one summary/commentary in response to one related reading from 5E (20 points),
3. an analytical essay on your topic. This essay may be a revision (substantial) of the first or second essay. It may also be a completely new essay. This essay will include a Works Cited page (60 points for essay, including works cited page). All early draft materials and review worksheets should also be in this folder. This essay should NOT look like a summary and commentary. It should read like a coherent, unified essay. 100 points
4. Freewriting: 11/6, 11/9, 11/11 (social networking freewriting topic), 11/13, 11/16, 11/18, 11/20, 11/30, 12/4 (Drafting or revising worksheet), 12/7 (peer review worksheet)
I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY WORK THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN IN PROCESS DURING CLASS AND THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN AS A DRAFT.
Follow this process to start working:
1. Decide on your topic. Narrow your topic. Decide on a tentative key idea about your topic. Freewrite on your topic. Make an organizational plan. List your tentative thesis and supporting topic sentences.
2. Determine how to connect one of the essays from 50 Essays to your topic and tentative thesis. This essay must be from the list online as a link on the syllabus for Nov. 16
3.Choose one essay from 50 Essays for your summary and commentary.
4. Write a summary and commentary in response to that essay from 50 Essays.Use the same format for the s/c that you are familiar with. This is due the day we return from Thanksgiving Break. This is ALL that is due on that date.
5. Start using the IUP databases. Do a search on your topic. Save a few articles. Read a few articles. Choose one to work with for your summary and commentary that relates to your key idea about your topic. Use the same format for the s/c that you are familiar with.
6. Write a draft of your essay.
7. Review your draft. Weave in a quotation from the essay from 50 Essays. Weave in a quotation from the essay from the IUP databases.
8. Keep rereading and rewriting. Go to the Writing Center. Send me a draft.
9. Be sure to use the checklist online.
10. When you turn in your portfolio, paper clip all your papers together and arrange your work in this order:
There will NOT be a reflective letter for this portfolio.
