Elmer Moran was in Company L when the 109th hit the beaches in July. The company was in reserve on August 6 with the rest of the 3rd Battalion in Gathelmo, France. |
According to Harry Kemp in The Regiment: Let Citizens Bear Arms, the 109th replaced the 110th on August 5th 1944. The third battalion (including Co. L) was in reserve in this first combat operation of the regiment on August 5, an attack into the hedgerows near Gathelmo. The third battalion was in Champ du Bolt that night. The received some artillery fire during the next two days. Since there is no explicit mention in Kemp's book, it is safe to assume that the 3rd battalion was in reserve until August 7 when General Brown ordered the regiment to attack Gathelmo.
The group was informed about Mr. Moran just recently by his son Daniel. Our sympathies go out to his family.
Born: Elmer Moran October 6th, 1917 West Sand Lake, NY
