Introduction to Research
CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Introduces students to various types of research in Composition and TESOL for examining the transmission of literacy. COURSE GOALS:Each student will:
1. Develop
familiarity with the various research methodologies that are used in the
disciplines of rhetoric, composition, applied linguistics, TESOL, and English
teacher education. This goal
assumes that the student will be able to read with understanding and evaluate
historical, theoretical, statistical, and ethnographic research in one or more
of these fields. This goal will be
evaluated by the final examination.
2. Develop
the ability to articulate the value of research for the teacher/scholar in both
pedagogy and research. This goal assumes that the student will be able to make a
coherent statement of the value of research in his or her teaching and research.
This goal will be evaluated by the final examination.
3. Develop
familiarity with various library resource materials in multiple media.
This goal assumes that the student will be able to use various scholarly media
in his or her research.
This goal will be evaluated through your participation in the class
collaborative project.
4. Develop
a sense of community with the faculty and students of the doctoral program in
Rhetoric & Linguistics at IUP, as well as a sense of community with the broader
profession. This goal assumes that
the student will be able to articulate a sense of his or her emerging identity
in terms of the local scholarly culture and the broader professional context.
This goal will be evaluated through participation in the course, your
performance on the summary paper on the reading log/journal, and your
performance on the final examination.
5. Develop
familiarity with cyber space as a medium for communication among members of the
IUP community and the broader professional community. This goal assumes that the student will be able to use
computer- based resources to facilitate communication with others.
This goal will be evaluated through your participation in class.
6. Develop a metacognitive and metalinguistic awareness of his or her own learning and apply that awareness to understanding various pedagogical strategies for the teaching of literacy to native and/or non-native students. This goal assumes that the student will be able to articulate an awareness of his or her own preferred learning strategies and apply that awareness in his or her teaching. This goal will be evaluated through your performance on the summary paper on the reading log/journal. |
