Research Topic Web Page

Research Topic Web Page Overview

As academics, our vision of scholarship has long been print-based. Thus for many, many years, doing a good research job meant going to the library and combing through the books and journals. Outside of printed resources and primary sources like people to interview, there wasn't much else a scholar could get their hands upon. But that time has passed.

Today, not only are many print resources available online, but all sorts of new media are also available for research. Thus if a scholar is researching a topic, looking at print-based sources is just a starting point. The web now opens all sorts of valuable methods and modes for exploring topics. Web sites, videos, blogs, podcasts, and online forums, to name just a few sources, all can add rich information to a scholarly study of any topic. Ignoring such resources not only traps one in a print-bias but also seems simply foolish.

If a scholar wants to become a true expert on a topic in the digital age, then that scholar must explore the world of digital resources. This assignment is aimed at helping you begin that digital exploration.

Research Topic Web Page Contents

For this task, I want you to search the web to gather information on your chosen research topic. Specifically, I want you to find information that you would not find searching in the library stacks. Your task is to create an introductory page about your topic. Creating the web page shouldn't be difficult. The more time consuming work is searching the web for resources.

Here's what you should include on your finished Research Topic Web Page:

Title

Give your research topic page a title related to the topic.

Author

Include yourself as the author and link your name back to your home page.

Overview

Describe the purpose of your page. Your page is meant to provide basic information about this research topic to other scholars/teachers who wish to learn about the topic.

Quote

If possible, include a quote (and its reference) which helps crystallize the focus of your page.

Resources

Find online resources for your topic. Search for these types of materials:

  • videos (YouTube, Google video)

  • images (Flicker)

  • PowerPoints (Slide Share)

  • discussion forums

  • blogs

    • Blogger

    • WordPress

  • web sites (these may be maintained by professors or other interested people)

  • wiki resources (Wikipedia)

As you find resources, place them on your web page. Title them, link the title to the web resource, and then add a brief description of the resource. For example

  • SITE--organization web site for an educational group which explores teaching with technology

A good resource page would have a variety of types of information. Aim for about 10 resources. You might try to find 2 or 3 sources in each category. For instance, look for 2 relevant videos, 2 blogs on the topic, 2 organization sites, etc.

Images

If possible, include 2 or 3 images that help set the tone/style for your page.

References

Include 3 or 4 key print references on your page. For this section, list a few of the scholars who are the most important to read when researching this topic. So, if you are creating a Research Topic Web page about narrative, you would naturally list Pagnucci's Living the Narrative Life in this section!
