Technology Use in Courses

  • I developed IUP's first online writing and literature courses.
  • These days I teach all my courses using computers and web materials (plus the occasional burst of unbridled teacher enthusiasm and old fashioned chalk dust!)
  • Online Course Sites: This site lists links to course materials I have posted on the web for students. You are welcome to borrow this material for your own teaching purposes (but please just throw in a link to my home page and a reference somewhere to give me a little credit).

Student Web Projects

My writing courses regularly include an online component. I want my students to have a chance to share their writing with an audience beyond one teacher, so I teach students how to publish their writing on the Internet and how to create web pages. Of course, many of the students quickly surpass my technological skills and create highly advanced web sites. In fact, some of my students have even turned a course web project into a full time job. Several sample projects by students are listed below under the appropriate classes. You can also view a large group of web projects by clicking here:

Internet-Based Teaching History

I've been using the Internet in my writing courses since 1996. For information about my early experiences, click here:

I should also thank retired IUP Professor Mary Miko who taught the first workshop I ever attended on how to teach with web pages. She literally changed my entire teaching life!

Service

Professional Background

  • I worked as a professional technical writer for 5 years writing computer manuals for IBM, Kimberly Clark (makers of Kleenex), CUNA Mutual Insurance, and SimCity

Or Another Way of Putting It

I've been teaching with technology since the Internet was just a pup, and he's getting to be an old dog now. If you want the full story, you can read:
