The English Club

The English Club, is a organization for undergraduate English majors. They do not currently have a website, however the consitution listed below reveals a great deal of information about the organization. If you would like to learn more or join please contact Jean Wilson, the organization's advisor.

The English Club Constitution

  • Name
    This organization is and shall be called "The English Club."
  • Mission
    The mission of this organization is to foster the love of literature, writing, film, and conversation.
  • Membership
    Membership in this organization is open to any and all IUP students interested in furthering their love of all aspects of English, without regard to race, lifestyle, color, religious creed, disability, national origin, affectional or sexual orientation, or gender.    
  • Officers
    The Officers of this organization shall include the President, Vice President, Secretary, and the Treasurer.
    1. Election of Officers
      The Officers shall be selected by a majority vote at the end of each spring semester, and shall serve for one full academic year.  All Officers shall be enrolled students of IUP and shall maintain good academic standing, as defined by the University.
    2. Duties and Powers of Officers
      1. President
        The President shall preside over meetings, initiate committees, appoint committee chairpersons, and take attendance at meetings.  The President shall have the power to fill any vacancies of offices that may occur.
      2. Vice President
        The VP shall assume the duties of the President in his/her absence of if he/she is incapable of performing said duties.  The VP shall also be in charge of publicity and of planning trips or projects.
      3. Secretary
        The Secretary shall record the minutes of all meetings and handle the distribution of the same when appropriate.  The Secretary shall also be responsible for communication amongst members of the organization; e.g., distribute e-mails informing members of upcoming meetings and events.
      4. Treasurer
        The Treasurer shall collect and be responsible for all dues and donations.  The Treasurer shall maintain a budget for the organization and be prepared to present an itemized account of this budget when needed.
    3. Impeachment of Officers
      If an Officer if found to have failed to perform his/her responsibilities, the said Officer may be impeached, subject to a two-thirds vote of the membership.  A replacement Officer may then be appointed by the President, or elected by a majority of the membership.
  • Adviser(s)
    The membership of the organization shall select an adviser from the faculty, staff, or administration of IUP.  The adviser shall serve the best interests of the organization and its members, and reasonably attempt to ensure that all business conducted by the organization complies with University policies.
  • Meetings
    The organization shall hold a minimum of one (1) meeting per month during the regular academic year.
  • Attendance/Activity Requirements
    As the goal of this organization is to involve a variety of individuals in the shared love of all aspects of English, the organization shall encourage participation at whatever level to which an individual is able to commit.  Although the organization would encourage regular attendance at meetings and activities, no exclusionary measures will be taken against individuals who wish to participate on an occasional basis.
  • Financial Obligation
    Dues will be $3 per semester.  Members must submit their dues at the third meeting or activity they attend in a given semester if they wish to continue participation in the organization.
  • Amendments
    Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed and approved by two-thirds (2/3) vote of the members present at the designated meeting.  Members must be notified one meeting in advance of the amendment being voted upon.  Amendments cannot significantly change or eliminate items required for continued University recognition.
