Career Exploration

The Next Step Program is designed to help you learn both what college life is like and also how a college degree can help you in the future. We're going to start by having you write down some of the thoughts you have about the job you hope to have in the future.

Step 1--Your Paper's Heading
At the top of your paper, in bold, type the words Next Step Career Exploration, your name, and the date.  College papers always require basic heading information.

Step 2--Save Your Work
Save your work onto the A: drive. Call your file Career Exploration. Make sure you hear your disk drive turning and that the disk drive light comes on. If you are not sure how to save your work onto your disk, ask for help. It is always a good idea to save your work regularly as you go along because it's pretty common for the power to go out or for the computers to crash in college computer labs. You donít want to lose all your work because you didnít save.

Step 3--Career Listings
List 5 different jobs you might want to do in the future. It's not uncommon for people to change jobs several times during a lifetime. Underline the 2 careers that you are most interested in at the present time.

Step 4--Your Thoughts
Now we want you to write at least one paragraph about each of the 2 careers you selected in Step 3. For each career, write out full sentence answers to these questions:

1. Why are you interested in this job?

2. What do you think it would be like to work at this job?

3. What things about you make you a good candidate for this job? 4. What sort of education will you need to get this job?
