An Introduction to TWARC
TWARC is a vision for reinventing English studies. Specifically, we have developed for a proposal for a new kind of doctoral program in English which links literature and composition studies, is interdisciplinary in nature, and synthesizes teaching, reading, and writing about our socially diverse and historically different cultures.
We believe our vision is both optimistic and achievable. Naturally, many obstacles stand in the way of a sweeping proposal like this one, not the least of which are the long established beliefs and practices of higher education. Nevertheless, we hope that in the coming millennium, English teachers will join together to make TWARC a reality at many campuses.
We are making a formal presentation of our TWARC concept at
the 49th Annual Conference on Composition and Communication (in
Chicago, Apr. 1-4, 1998). To read more about the proposal and its
creators, please try the links below:

TWARC started in the English Graduate
Studies Programs at Indiana
University of Pennsylvania. However, the idea does little
good if it only stays local. We would love to have people from
other universities get involved with TWARC. To join, just click
