Structure/Content

Dr. Sue Welsh and Jolene Recupero McIlwain, 2003 Summer Institute Leaders

The Summer Institute for Writing as a Way to Learn is an intensive, process-centered workshop based on the sharing of experience and expertise.  Participants meet four days each week for five weeks.  The morning sessions feature sharing of knowledge and classroom strategies and include presentations by noted consultants and writers.  The afternoons are devoted to discussion of readings, writing, peer response, and peer editing sessions.

The Summer Institute's program content is congruent with the Pennsylvania Literacy Framework for language and learning across the curriculum.  Although content varies according to the experience and interests of the Fellows, these areas of interest and practice are typically addressed

Key Areas of Interest and Practice

  • writing across the curriculum
  • revising
  • writing processes
  • publishing
  • teacher-student conferences
  • reader response
  • computers and writing
  • responding to writing
  • portfolio assessment
  • poetry and fiction writing
  • designing in-service workshops

In addition, participants will present demonstrations on topics of their choosing related to the use of writing as a way to learn.
