People and Places:     Creative Writing about Southwestern Pennsylvania

Summer Workshops for Young Writers

For students entering grades all grades, 2-12

"People and Places" is a workshop to create, share, and celebrate the writing of students.   Taught by SPWP Teacher Consultants, the workshop gives young writers a chance to write, journal, and share their writing.  

A Typical Workshop Day (1/2 day program):

9:00 Journaling with prompts and sharing

9:30 Mini-lesson and writing

10:30 Break

10:45 Individual writing and conferencing with teacher

11:30-12:00 Small group sharing

(Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)

11:30-12:30 Anthology preparation

(Thursday, Friday)

At the end of the workshop, each writer publishes in a workshop anthology.


Young Writers Programs for the Summer of 2008

 

The Community Foundation of the Alleghenies Grant Program will run at these locations:       

  East Side Elementary, for students entering grades 2-4  (1/2 day program)

                application for the East Side People and Places program

 Greater Johnstown High School, for students entering grades 10-12   (full day program) 

 North Star Middle School, for students entering grades 6-9   (full day program)      

 Preference will be given to students from the sponsoring schools.  Applications are due April 1, 2008.  Invitations to register will be sent out by early May.  Registrations and $25 nonrefundable registration fee is required at that time.  The Young Writers brochure for CFA-sponsored workshops is available here.                                               

Ligonier Valley Endowment Grant Program  

 Preference is given to students from the Ligonier Valley School District.  

 The program will take place at:               

 R.K. Mellon Elementary, for students entering grades 2-5 (1/2 day program)   

  Ligonier Valley Middle School, for students entering grades 6-9   (1/2 day program)        

 Applications are due by April 8, 2008.  Invitations to register will be sent out in early May.  Registrations and a $50 dollar nonrefundable registration fee is required at that time.   Application available here  for LVE-sponsored programs.

Indiana Area Middle School Program

This program is for students entering grades 5-9.  Applications are due by April 8, 2008.  Invitations to register will be sent out in early May.  Registrations and a $125 registration fee is required at that time.
